Make: Spats 1

Making Spats, Part 1

More stuff that I can wear.

What are spats?

Steampunk Spats found on Etsy
Spats, or spatterdashes, are fabric covers that are worn over the shoes and ankles, with buttons down the sides. Originally they were to protect the shoes and socks from mud, but they evolved into a fashion statement for the upper classes and were prevalent in the late 19th to early 20th century.

Gaiters cover the ankles and legs to to the knee, but were not considered a fashionable item. They were used to protect the legs in industrial situations.

Steampunk spats (especially those for women) are often extend to the knees rather than stopping at the ankles.

Why spats?

Because I love boots, and this way I can have more visual styles of boots without actually buying more boots.  This seems like a good idea.  Plus, I can actually wear these to work, in much the same way as I am able to wear my flight cap. Plus, they're just COOL!

I'll will make them to match my boots from Ziera. The two centre pairs are made on the same last, and I'm pretty sure the two tall pairs will be similar enough.  That way, I should only need to make one pair of spats and they will fit at least four sets of boots.  If I'm clever, I might be able to make them reversible as well.
