Wear: Garrion Cap

Garrison Cap Part 3

How To: Garrison Cap Part 1
How To: Garrison Cap Part 2

Angst

I don't "feel" hats. When I put one on, I can go "hmm, yeah, that looks good" but when I try to make or decorate one myself I'm left looking at myself going, "errr, no?" but I can't articulate why it's not working (unlike with clothes/shoes/handbags).

This made finishing this hat a serious issue. I'd pin the flap to the crown and try it on.  Then I'd un-pin and try again. Then I'd think I had it, and sew it on, and then unpick it again.

Then, because the wool had some natural stretch but the lining on the flap didn't, the lengths weren't matching up, and I wasn't getting any flap overlap, and it was all a bit frustrating. After multiple pinnings I finally hit on a combination/location that just "clicked" and that was that. I stitched that puppy into place and we were DONE!

I'm very pleased ^_^. This is a hat I can wear to work on a cold morning (and did). Watch me pose, and here, and here, and here*.
MrIcy has purchased feathers for me and later I shall make it FANCY.

Tips

  • The pattern is much smaller than stated. I have a 57cm head, had to let the pattern out by 1cm (all I could squeeze in with the seam allowances) and it only fit because the material had some give in it. I'd say it would suit a 55cm head.
  • Try it on as you go. Don't wait like me.
  • Make the flap much longer than you think it should be; you can always cut it down.
  • If I were to make it again, I'd make the vertical height larger as well, maybe by 2cm or more. Once again, you can always cut it down.
  • Make sure if you use lining it's of the same "stretchiness" as your fabric. If you're going to use piping, maybe make sure your fabric has no stretch at all.
  • If I were to make it again I wouldn't use the soft woolen material I chose; I'd use a stiffer cotton. I think that would give a better result.

* Some of that "soft-focus" is because I forgot to wipe over the front facing camera lens. Smeary.
